It's not all that unusual for stand-up comics to have multiple
talents and therefore be described using hyphens: Most commonly,
you see "comedian-actor" or "comedian-writer,"
or occasionally, of course, " comedian-actor-writer."
Amidst the world of these so-called hyphenates, Chris Fairbanks
stands as an unusual--and unusually talented--stand-up. Oh, sure,
Chris has the triple hyphenate thing covered--comedian-actor-writer,
and we'll come back to some of those in a moment--but he also sports
one more talent (and hyphen) that is far more unusual: "artist."
Indeed, Chris is an accomplished artist, doing painting, illustrations
and graphic design for a variety of clients and for his own creative
fulfillment. (You can see a sampling of his artwork at his website
(www.ChrisFairbanks.com).
But chances are you're probably not considering coming by Cap City
to check out some posters Chris has designed. Still, there's a very
good reason to hightail it to the club this week to catch Chris
in action: He's damn funny. If you've been around Austin for awhile,
you may recall that Chris used to live here--and, in fact, won the
2003 "Funniest Person In Austin," the nationally-revered
comedy competition organized and hosted by Cap City. He's based
in Los Angeles now, but his showbiz resume is marked by a number
of notable achievements and other entries, including wowing folks
at Montreal's Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival, faring
extremely well in Comedy Central's "Laugh Riots" national
comedy contest, starring in a number of pilots, appearing on ABC's
"Jimmy Kimmel Live," NBC's "Last Comic Standing,"
Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" and "Reality Bites
Back," and working for the Fuel Network as an action sports
correspondent. With Matt Willis.
